Zorgtoeslag (health care)~€ 40.857~€ 51.142Hard income cap — the allowance stops entirely above the limit.
Huurtoeslag (rent)~€ 24.000+~€ 31.000+Gradual phase-out based on rent height and income; no hard rent cap in 2026, tapering typically starts between € 24.000 and € 47.000 depending on the household.
Kindgebonden budget (child)~€ 29.500+~€ 38.500+Phase-out at 6.9% of income above the start point; runs out anywhere from ~€50,000 to ~€90,000 depending on the number of children.

Toeslagen are paid monthly in advance by the Belastingdienst and reconciled after the tax year. Report income changes during the year to avoid repayment demands.

Understanding Dutch toeslagen

The marginal tax & benefit cliff

Earning €1,000 more gross can cost you more than it gains: huurtoeslag and zorgtoeslag taper away simultaneously, so the effective marginal rate on that extra income can exceed 70–80%.

Crossing a hard income cap removes an allowance entirely for the whole year — always model a raise or bonus before accepting it.

The 1 January asset cut-off rule

Asset limits are measured strictly on 1 January at 00:00 — a single snapshot of savings, stocks and crypto across all your accounts worldwide.

Being €1 over the cap on that date cancels the allowance for the entire year, even if your balance drops in February.

Pension & 30% ruling optimization

Allowances are tested on your toetsingsinkomen — taxable income, not gross salary. Pre-tax pension contributions and the 30%/27% expat ruling both reduce it.

Lowering taxable income by a few thousand euro can move you back under a threshold and unlock hundreds of euro of toeslagen per year.
