Expat Money Guide

About Us & Editorial Standards

Expat Money Guide exists because Dutch financial rules are genuinely hard to read from the outside. The Belastingdienst publishes accurate information, but it assumes you already know what a heffingskorting is, why Box 3 taxes a return you never made, or how NHG changes your mortgage rate. We translate those rules into calculators you can actually use on your own numbers.

Our mission

To give internationals living in the Netherlands a clear, honest picture of their money: net salary and the 30% ruling, wealth tax in Box 3, toeslagen, borrowing capacity and kosten koper, freelance income as a ZZP'er, and the road to retirement through AOW, workplace pension and private investing.

Editorial independence

Our calculator logic is never influenced by commercial partners. Comparison cards are ordered by the criterion stated on the card — typically headline rate or cost — not by who pays us. If a page ever contains affiliate links, that will not change which providers appear or how they rank.

Transparent methodology

  • Tax brackets, credits, ruling percentages and Box 3 parameters come from published Belastingdienst and Rijksoverheid figures, kept in a single versioned data file per tax year.
  • Borrowing capacity follows Nibud financing standards; allowances follow Toeslagen and SVB parameters.
  • Future years are marked as projections from Prinsjesdag proposals until the relevant legislation is approved by parliament.
  • Every calculator states its assumptions on the page, and results are always indicative rather than an official assessment.

Who this is for

Internationals who live, work or freelance in the Netherlands — new arrivals working out their first payslip, 30% ruling holders planning ahead, families claiming toeslagen, and anyone weighing renting against buying or saving for retirement here.

Corrections & contact

If you spot a figure that looks wrong, tell us at hello@expatmoneyguide.nl. We would rather fix a rate quickly than have someone plan around a stale number. You can also read exactly how we make money.
